(err, hm does this question make sense?)

thank-you in advance

i read about the dynamic range of the 5d in Dpreview from here ( The results of our 'extended test suite' were a confirmation of what we expected (and knew), that a full frame camera fully exposes the limits of the lens used and that simply because the pixel pitch is larger we aren't automatically going to get more dynamic range and lower noise. (Remember the EOS 5Ds pixel pitch is the same as the EOS-1D Mark II).

Here's the DPReview page about the 5D's dynamic range: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos5d/page22.asp (external link)

There's a comparison with the DR of a number of other cameras (1Ds Mark II, 20D, Nikon D2X) at the bottom of the page.

There's a few other tests online. Can't comment on their accuracy. Phil Askey at DPReview has a good track record in terms of testing.

Here's a couple of others:

And the Pondria DR test based on input of several members on FR:

Thank you kindly for this nice link.

I think the most interesting point in this test info is that all of the tested cameras basically have the same dynamic range.

I would be very interested in data from the Fuji S3 DSLR, as it is claimed to have technology that increases the dynamic range. Knowing if that is actually true, and if true, just how much more dynamic range the S3 might afford, would be of grand interest.

Enjoy! Lon

Well, then you just lookup the Fuji S3 on dpreview...: http://www.dpreview.com …/fujifilms3pro/page18.asp (external link)

There's a comparison with the 20D on that page.

Thank you for the nice link. It was just what I was looking for.

Looks like the Fuji S3 DSLR does increase the dynamic range, and about two stops over the Canon 20D. That is a meaningful amount. Since the other link above indicated several other popular Canon and Nikon DSLR's cameras were about the same as the Canon 20D, this means likely the Fuji S3 indeed excels in this regard (with regard to the mainstream DSLR offerings).

Dynamic range issues are my biggest problem with my digital camera. Additional dynamic range would be a very welcome enhancement.

Enjoy! Lon

I've been to a few weddings within the past 3 yrs and a few of the pros were using the fuji s3, I don't know exactly what it is but I recall a conversation with one of my friends stating that fuji's sensor does have a wider dynamic range but it has problems in other areas.. was it the noise or somethign else? i forgot, any links where I can read up on this

thx
Raymond

I think the Fuji S3 is a very good camera, and the extended dynamic range would be helpful for a wedding photographer (hey all those white dresses).

But, I suspect there is another reason a lot of photographers had an S series Fuji DSLR. Traditionally I suspect that Nikon cameras were the most popular cameras for wedding photographers. And until the appearance of the D70, D2X, and 200D, these photographers gravitated to the S series Fuji cameras as an alternative to the hole in Nikon's offerings.

I personally know two wedding photographers who use the S2 and/or S3 for exactly this reason. They already had a pile of fine Nikon lenses, but were better satisfied with the Fuji S series than what Nikon had to offer (D100 and D1X).

I suspect if you survey the industry now, you would see that they are now buying Nikon cameras. With the D70, 200d and D2X, the pickings are not so slim for someting to mount all their nice lenses on.

Enjoy! Lon

The Fujii's have a reputation for excellent skin tone color reproduction, which makes them popular with portrait and wedding photographers.
