Loose lens mount???

I just received my D30 and could not be happier except for this little problem. When ever I hook up my 70-200 L series it clicks in normally and works fine, however if you grab the lens aroud the barrel the camera turns back and forth probably only 1/8th of an inch. this does not happen when the lens is on my other canon bodies. Has anyone ever had this same problem? If so how did canon deal with the problem and is it worth sending it back to canon.

from what I understand this is normal on all lenses. You notice it more as the lens weighs a lot more than say your 50 f/1.8 . I have the 100-400L IS and it does this. I dont notice it on a 75-300 of the 50 f/1.8 but they weigh less

This does not appear normal to me. I have a 300mmL which though not as long as 100-400 fully extended, but quite long and heavy. Even when fitted with EF-25 extender, I can not see any backlash in the lens mount. Frankly speaking 1/8th inch backlash will definitely throw all you focus upside down when working with Macro or telephoto lens. It may not be a bad idea to send it for service.

I had this 'problem' too (only less than 1 mm slack) and after Canon changed the backside ring of my 70-200 they said it didn't help - it seems to be normal that you see slack because the lens weights so much. I don't know if that is the right conclusion, but at least if it's same with most 70-200's and it does not affect image in any way I'd say that it's easiest to ignore the problem (if the slack is small - if it's as big as you say then it sounds like too much to me and worth a check - maybe D30 lens collars can be slightly different).

I have noticed this with my 28-300 f 3.5-5.6 L that is a very heavy lens. My concern is the lens and my 1D body are suppose to be dust resistant surly this problem could be a weakness?

Guess so but looks like things haven't got any better in all that time.

My 100-400 has play when mounted on 20D, I have read that this play is to allow for expansion.

Most of my lenses have very slight play on the 40D. But on 7D, they are all tight.

If the lens is dust resistant, it'll have a rubber ring around the the mount. This rubber ring will seal the lens (at the mount) whether there's a little free play or not.

That's right it has a seal but from what I can see the seal is not flexing it is moving/sliding against the body and I have started to have a dust problem.

I have very noticeable play on my 1D MK III when I mount my 70-200 2.8. LII that is just weeks old. Difficult to measure but suspect it is less than 1/32". Lens mounts and snaps into place ok. More noticeable with extender. 50mm is rock solid.
