You know how you lose your car in the mall parking lot? Well, look at this parking lot. Thousands of bicycles on 3 levels across the street from Centraal Station in Amsterdam.

When I was there I was amazed at the amount of bikes. I was told that alot of folks ride old beat up ones and think of nothing of just hopping on a different bike if the cant locate theirs.

If only cyclists were treated better in the US...

I rode my bike to/from work and had some pretty harsh things said to me when riding on a 3 lane each way road with no bike lane. I turned to the driver and smiled, then told him instead of yelling at me; talk to the city who maintains the road and ask for a bike lane. I'm just trying to get home...

It's refreshing to see some places do favor bikes. I love the pic!

:D I was wondering about that!
No way would I ride a bike in rush hour traffic around here. But there it could be fun!

I'll be going to Amsterdam real soon. I found this bit of info in a FAQ..

"Because of its small size, the main form of public transportation in Holland is a bike. Feel free to take any bike of which you are able to pick the lock. (An art learned by Hollandse children before the age of 3) However, don't expect your own bike to be where you left it three minutes earlier. The hunting season for bikes is open 365 days a year. Have fun."

wow! This thread coming back to life surprises me. I didn't find vehicle traffic in Holland all that bad considering there are just as many residents there as there are in Canada. What they call gridlock is normal everyday traffic to me. I imagine their bike theft is probably equal to our auto theft......
