I just got home from a small club show here in Las Vegas. A quick skim through the photos showed that the theory in my head of what settings I would need were not entirely accurate. I did however notice this photo in the quick scrolling.

The composition isn't the greatest, with the lead singer/guitarist being shot in profile, but I do like the capture.

QUOTED IMAGE

In addition to the problem with the angle, it looks a tad soft, too.

Where in Vegas did you shoot this? I'll be shooting there next weekend, at the Aruba and the Cheyenne Saloon...

That was at Celebrity - Tonight will be at Jillian's.

Hopefully tonight I can get some better shots, better angles and such. I was trying not to be invasive in my shooting, as I don't know that band. The band I want to shoot tonight said to shoot all I want, so I may be a little more aggressive getting into a good position.

Who's playing next weekend?

It is a sad fact of concert shooting that you MUST be somewhat assertive ... it is better to be told not to do something than not to try it (within reason of course) but you can easily be your own worst enemy. I find that once you are accepted as being a professional or "with the band" or some other sort of "credential" that people generally just accept whatever you do. And for those who are obsessive about "rules" for you, let them tell you ... that's their job and without you they wouldn't have anything to do! :-)

I wholeheartedly agree. When I shoot off-road races, I can be pretty territorial about my spots. Since it was my first concert shoot, and got there well into the concert, I just wanted to stand out of the way. Tonight though, I should be there early enough to stake out an area close to the stage and see what I can get today.

I'll post some more tomorrow. I will also be shooting the drag races at LVMS tonight, so maybe some good shots from both are in my future?

Too right you do have to be assertive in a lot of venues to get a good position to shoot.

Generally most people are fairly tolerant and let you get in for some good shots; there have been a few exceptions where I have had verbal altercations with arseholes but thankfully they are few and far between.

I also find that if you change your position after shooting from one spot for a few minutes you don't continually block a group of patrons views for the whole show and people appreciate that. If you say to someone could you let me through for a few minutes to get some photos they are generally pretty obliging.

If it were in focus, it would have been a very nice image.... Show some more.

The night after this concert, I shot another band, some of those shots turned out a little better. I'll start a thread about that when I get home.
