Ok I have a 70-200mm f/4. There is a switch on it 1.2m and 3m. What is this for? I understand it changes the minimum focus but why would I want to change this? Can you give me a situation example?

When you know your subject will be more than 3 meters away, you can set it to the 3m and your autofocus won't bother looking any closer. This will speed up the AF speed and allow you to get more of your shots in focus. I use it for shooting motocross and road racing mostly.

Ah Ha! I do Motorsport shooting as well and I've had it set to 1.2m. ( thats the way it came and i never changed it) I've had, sometimes, a hard time with the autofocus and been getting lots of completely out of focus shots. Thanks for the answer. Can't wait to see the difference at the next race. Canon 30D
