Sorry for the mess-upI am reposting.... I had pulled the images but in doing so caused more confusion in the process. I will only post three, the link to some of the rest is HERE (external link)

well you know, those high school theaters have only marginal lighting, and I was trying to keep the image as clean and simple as possible. I was worried they might be over stated.

... actually I tried to delete the thread but couldn't figure out how to do it.

I had changed my mind about posting them as they were... well... sort of just intended for the kids parents and had decided to pull this post. Hardly anything to get excited about compared to the other events stuff here....

any how.... if you care to look, they are HERE (external link)

Comments and critique are more then welcome. My son is a going into his last year and had thought of not being in the band, but had so much fun playing for a crowd rather then just practicing - he is reconsidering his decision. If that is the case, I will get more chances to shoot he and his friends so advice for these type of events is very helpful. Cheers.

Shouldn't have pulled the original post, as the photos look great to me! Care to share more info about your equipment, lens, ISO, tv, av, etc. used to shoot these? I don't know what you posted in the original, but these look impressively sharp to me given the low light situation.

Sys - I shot these with a 20D for it's low noise capabilities with my Sigma 120-300 f2.8 attached. All setting were manual and manually focused as well. thank for the looks.

Oh sorry.... ISO 800 for most... a couple could have been at ISO 1600 but I really avoid it.

Cheers.

Yup, these are winners! I tried to capture similar ones for Kook and the Gang (in the pipeline) and don't think I did as well. Nice.

looks like you managed to get a highschool with good lighting. either that, or you did some amazing postprocessing. second picture captures what it's all about, but great shots overall. i wish i could move around as much as you did for my school's jazz band (damn parents telling me to sit down all the time)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Nicely done! I love the light shining on the trumpet in #1.

Thanks..... the lighting wasn't all that good, but it wasn't horrible either... it was just your average high school with high school budget lighting. A couple of things I did try was to over expose by a tad (about a 1/2 stop). Reason being the first few shots I took, the cinder block walls and worn curtain were showing up too much. I figured by exposing for the highlights, I could drop the exposure back to normal in post and have the background and shadows drop to black. When I first opened the images, I thought I had made a huge mistake as with even ISO 800 on a 20d the noise was horrible. But when I lowed the levels back down, the background dropped out taking the noise with it. I haven't printed a large size print yet though... so we'll see how well it holds together.

Still shooting and learning.....
