Becky and I have done quite a bit of theatre over the past year or so, but last Friday was our first opportunity to shoot a dance recital.

We were pretty pleased with the results. I was concerned about getting enough shutter speed to prevent blur, but I took a piece of advice from POTN member and super ballet photog Rutt - I used 1/400 shutter in Tv mode, with safety shift enabled to prevent underexposure if the light got too dark for my 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Apertures were in the f/4 to f/5.6 range at ISO 3200.

Here are a few that people seemed to like. As you can see, there was quite a range of age groups among the dancers.

Nice shots. Looks like you effectively froze the action in the 2nd one - the girl in the middle must have froze in her tracks when she noticed the camera on her :)

7D and lenses.

Very nice, all three! I am trying to trade my services for my daughter's ballet lessons! :-)

Very nice Curtis. I like that you caught those two in mid air (1st image). :D
The performers in the last shot look very gracious.
I have to agree with SYS, those little Ballerina's are going to need their toes. ;)

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone. I'm told the average age of the older group is 78! They were fun to watch. I hope I last that long, and I hope I'm still ambulatory when I get there!

I was hoping the "cuteness factor" would outweigh the technical flaws in that one. ;) I got a ton of shots of those adorable little girls. Ain't nothin' cuter than a 4-yr-old in a tutu!
