Hello everybody, I have a problem with the file numbering of my Rebel XT. My Rebel XT has 2,500 real shots, buy this weekend I had to use the CF Card in another camera (actually a Canon Powershot A40) which has about 8,700 shots. The issue here is that now that the CF card is back in my Rebel XT, when I take a picture it numbers it as 87xx (i.e. 8701, 8702, 8703...)!!!! Thats 6000+ the number of real shots in my rebel xt!!! What can I do to restore the numbering that It used to have? the 25XX (i.e. 2522, 2523, 2524)??

Thank you!

I don't think you can go back that is why its important to format cf in computer before inserting it into camera from another camera.

You can reset the numbering on a 350D/Rebel XT, but you need a card reader to do it...

1. Format the CF card with your computer so it has no files/folders on it.
2. Switch on your camera without a CF card in place.
3. Go into your camera's menu and set file numbering to "auto reset"
3. Put the newly formatted CF card into the camera and take a picture
4. Go into the camera menu and change the file numbering back to "continuous"
5. Take out the CF card and put it into card reader - you should see image 0001, within folder 100CANON
6. Rename the 0001 part of the image number to 2524
7. Rename the 100CANON folder to 125CANON
8. Put the CF card back into the camera and take a picture
9. The picture you just took should be 2525

Important to change the folder name to match the file it contains. And also important to change file numbering to "reset" with no CF card in place - otherwise the camera will still continue to number from whatever is on the card.

W/ the cf card in card reader open my computer. Locate the drive letter where the cf card is and right click and left click format and then follow instruction in new window. Quick Format works just fine to format CF.
