Which would you consider the camara most rugged for use in the pouring rain and lousy weather, bumps/scratches/etc ?

1) Canon 10D
2) Nikon D70
3) Canon 300D

I take it that since this is a canon forum, you're refering to the D70.

None of those.

None of them are weather sealed nor are they pro series bodies which are designed to take substantial abuse.

Actually, none of your choices will fare very well without some serious protective outer covering. None of these are meant to be exposed to weather extremes. Canon 1 series bodies used in conjunction with certain weather-sealed lenses are suited for moderate exposures....but even so, most people forced to shoot in such extremes resort to some sore of protection such as http://www.stormjacket.com/ (external link)

As for the water all will get screwed up but as for abuse I think they will all weather a hell of a shaking as long as their is no hard impact. I have a lowepor AW-200 sling bag and have taken my 300D when I had it and my 20D on many ROUGH ATV trailes and snowmobiling as well with no problems and I have fallen off my sled onto my camera befor and had no damage the the camera just my back

^ My thoughts exactly. Taking one of those bodies into pouring rain is like wearing suede shoes in that weather, they're gonna get screwed up. ;) Either go 1 series or get a waterproof cover to keep it safe at all times.

As for scratches & bumps, the D70 & 300D are plastic bodies while the 10D is magnesium. So that pretty much answers that question.

Although it's not something i'd do everyday, i have previously taken my 300D out into some fairly horrendous weather just to get a shot(for work). I employed the help of a plastic bag and scotch tape and both my camera and not-so-cheap lens survived the ordeal.

If you expect to shoot in ordinary weather on even a slightly semi-regular basis, best to purchase the tool designed to deal with that. I wouldn't expect too many people would be standing out in torrential rain/thunderstorms to get a shot...but then again.....

No, what the other guys said, they aren't built to withstand harsh abuse.

Slap on one of THESE (external link) and any camera will do. I use mine all the time and it is great.

now THEY look cool!

a touch more elegant than my plastic shopping bag and scotch tape effort, and obviously easily re-usable and quick fitting
gotta get me one of them...

For bumps and stuff like that, the 10D maybe the best since it's made of magnesium body, while the other two are made of plastic. As for scratches, the rubber finish on the 10D and the D70 both seem much more resilient than the shiny raw plastic on the 300D.
As for rain or dust, none of them are sealed so if exposed enough, all would get rain/dust into the interior of the camera.

Hi

How many people have fried a prosumer dSLR by getting it wet (not dropping it in water)? Wondering as I was chatting to a freelance news photographer with a 20D who said that he used it in all weathers, dripping wet, and had no problems.

All the best

Keith
