I am looking for a lightweight tripod to carry on hiking and backpacking trips. I will be using it to support my Rebel XT with smaller zoom lenses. My Bogen 3021 is way too heavy for this kind of use. I would like to have something that is compact, has independently adjustable legs, extends to around 50” and will go down to near ground level. I ran across a hiker this weekend with Slik 613CF, this would fit the bill quite well but I can’t afford $240 plus more for a small ballhead.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Shaun

Pity. I just got one and I was all set to suggest it until right there.

I assume that by "independently adjustable legs" you're referring to the leg angle, not merely to length.

Yes, I am wanting the leg angles independent of each other.

How do you like the 613CF? Maybe I should break down and spend a little more, at this point I *think* I would rather put the extra money into some better glass. It's sucks being on a budget:o

Only just got it, but even with the Linhof UB-1 it's a super-light (under 2.5 lb) kit. I'm willing to settle for 4' max. height just to keep the weight down. Center column will reverse for ultra-low shots as well, and the leg locks are less awkward than I've come to expect from twist-locks.

Oh yeah. I didn't notice whether the legs will angle out independently. I'll try to remember to check tonight.

Yes, the legs have 3 separate angle possible. And the center column, in addition to beinng reversable, is in 2 parts so you can use it when low to the ground.

Good glass isn't gonna help if you get motion blurr because your tripod sucks...
