I have been using a 10d for a few years, should I upgrade to the 30d and if so, why?

If the 10D is limiting you in any respects, then upgrade

I think the most attractive updates of the 20D/30D over the 10D are
- lower high ISO noise
- fast startup speed
- faster disk write speed.
As the 20D and 30D are not that different, you might also consider looking at a used 20D.

Best regards,
Andy

Go straight to the 5D. It feels exactly like the 10D in your hands, whereas the 20D and 30D feel smaller. The colors of the 5D are closer to the 10D also. I just took out my 10D and changed the batteries and updated firmware last week, and oh my that LCD is SMALL! I had gotten so used to my 5D that I forgot how tiny it was. If you are afetr a 1.6 crop camera, go to the 30D though, it has low light high-ISO capability the 10D can't dream of producing, and the bigger LCD.

You'll be surprised in the difference in speed between the 10D and 20D. Although I love my 10D, the write speed to the CF card alone is enough to make me want to scream. If I were upgrading, I'd go ahead and get the 30D for the picture styles feature.

Speed, definitely. Start up as well as everything else. Also, low light with the 20D is much better. The 10D has a little more noise, yes. That is a problem. I wasn't convinced that the upgrade wat the right thing to do, but once I got my hands on the 20D, I've been impressed, but still, aiming now for the 5D.

Unless you find the 10D limiting in someway or just want to get a newer toy, I wouldn't upgrade.

As some of the guys/gals mention, unless the 10D is limiting your creativity then it is a good camera to stick with for a couple more years. If you are just itching to upgrade then improvements on the 20D/30D outperform the 10D in some respects, e.g., start-up times, write speeds, higher buffer(?), low noise at high ISO, number of focusing points, etc.

If you have heaps of money to play with, the 5D is fantastic for its FF, otherwise the 30D or 20D should be really good...

I just upgraded to the 20D from the 10D. Why? The focus (better for chasing my 2 year old with), better low light performance - at ISO 1600 and even 3200 it's awesome. The extra resolution is nice, but doesn't add a huge amount. And whilst the start up and write speeds are nice, they were an irritation rather than stopping me getting shots.

If you're happy with your 10D, then why upgrade? If you have some cash you can spend, see if there's something else that would benefit you more - a course, some glass, some software, or anything.
