This showed up on DPREVIEW today:

http://www.dpreview.com …/06060501sonydslra100.asp (external link)

Olympus, Pentax, and perhaps Nikon should be concerned.

Of course, naming their lens mount "alpha" brings out memories of their prior product that used the next letter in the Greek alphabet (Beta), and how Sony always seems to shoot themselves in the foot.

Stay tuned.

Have Fun,

Rick

Maybe they will put a root kit on the media card each time it is inserted in the camera so it loads on your computer and they can see what you do with your photos and also protect you from being sold "counterfit" media, batteries or lenses.

It would be nice if someone made a small full frame body though.

This looks awesome!
10MP with built in IS!!!!! Schweeeeeeeeet :)

So.. what's with the "alpha" lens mount.. I read the blurb and could not really discern if this means that the new and upcoming Sonoltas will or won't accept Minolt Maxxum mount lenses?

If not.. than I concur with Rick that Sony is shooting at very closely attached feet indeed.

Hopefully,. it's just another name for the existing mount. ??

**EDIT**

Almost a year on since that first announcement we have the new Sony Alpha DSLR-A100, a compact, ten megapixel (CCD) digital SLR with a (Konica) Minolta lens mount...

...The lens mount is to be called the 'Alpha mount' and Sony has announced no less than 22 lenses which will carry the Sony Alpha branding (although many are based on existing Minolta lenses).

Phew!

Also note.. (shades of Beta ;) ) Htat this Sony Camera does NOT have a slot for Memory stick! CF is the only slot built in...
Just so that someones head wouldn't role though I;m sure,. Sony is including a Memory Stick to CF card adapter..

Really this looks like Sony is learning.. (slowly) by avoiding there dumbass Memory Stick.

Lots of features like IS throught sensor and dust shake system. Canon must come with something now.

I'm not sure if Canon will ever get Image stailization on their sensors due to their use of IS on the lens. Plus I hear stabilization doesn't work on larger than 1.6x cropped sensor.

What's surprising is that they are going to sell what appears to be a mid level camera, iwth mag. body, 10MP sensor, for $900. Hopefully that will help to drive down the price of other mid level cameras, including Canons.

I hope Canon updates the Rebel to a 2.5 LCD and 10MP sensor to compete.

How about the 16-80mm Ziess zoom, drool....

I'm also glad to see the 500mm AF mirror was carried over from Minolta, maybe I'll pick up an Alpha for these two lenses :)

They claim it's the same sensor put into the D200, too.

What's that about? No IS on FF sensors? Who told you that?

From what I've read, except for the addition of a few Sony technologies, it's basically a Konica Minolta with a Sony Badge...tell-tale sign is that it doesn't have a native Memory Stick slot, just a CF-->MS adaptor. And you know how sony like it's proprietary formats...

I'm not too unhappy with my 20D's noise. D200 reviews I've seen showed worse. Noticeably worse. Depends on what you're shooting and exact conditions.

I'm not sure that's a bad thing...

The CCD is likely all Sony but the lenses and ergonomics being all Minolta, why not? The Maxxum line of lenses was fine. No need to re-invent the wheel. I'm also glad to see that the lenses do appear the same, so all those Minolta loyalist will have only a new SLR to buy and not a new system...

I think I also remember reading that this camera and the lenses are even still made in the old minolta facilities, they just basically subcontract this out to Sony now. This may change over time, but it's great for those transitioning from Minolta gear.
