there is a BIG difference in the noise levels between the nikon and canon.

their lenses are not cheaper, they cost way more than their canon counterparts...

oops i misread, i thought by "big white" he meant L and then was comparing it to the price of the sony lens...my bad

i guess if i do end up getting a sony DSLR, i will wiat until Sigma comes out with some lenses, those prices are astronomical!!!!!

What's that about? No IS on FF sensors? Who told you that?

their IS involves physically moving the sensor, try that with FF and you'll get dark edges in every shot your hand happens to shake at. unlike canon's optical IS, sony's (and panasonic's) IS will degrade image quality thoughout the picture if the lens isn't sharp enough on the edges. either way, i'de take my XT+70-200IS to the sony IS+70-200 any day. i can at least shoot @ISO1600 and still make a decent 5x7 with good sharpness.

blonde, ccd is an OLD sensor technology. it was invented in the 1970s.

Oh gosh, I thought that meant that Canon IS lenses don't work on FF sensors...that's BS!

My porsche- no need to wait, sigma already has lenses out. the sony will use the same mount as the existing minolota which means that you can use existing sigma lenses for the mino mount.

basroil- i know it is old but i didn't know it was that old!!!

Dan- i am used to that. i am a slow typer which means i always miss by a minute...

good point!

but i'm still undecided, as of now its down to a D70s, wait a while for a used 1D MKII, or if this sony is any good, then that too.

Canon has nothing to worry about, they have been a camera company for years and years, they know what there doing and they respond to change and competition well

An interesting selection of bodies to choose from. All of these are probably good cameras, but I'm curious why you have narrowed your selection to these three in particular. Was your choice based only on price?

For me I would select a body primarily because of the entire system and would choose a 30D or a D200 over these three, unless I needed the ruggedness and weather sealing of a pro body, then I'd go the 1D series route.

It's always interesting to hear someone else's view of the world though :)

nope, just ones i liked in particular

well i started with a d50/d70/d70s, a rebel, a 20d, a 1d MKI, a 1d MKII, a pentax *ist DS and a few other, then narrowed it down based on things i like about each. the system i buy into was very important, hence why i ditched the pentax, no lenses.

so i picked the 1d MKII (used) for my canon body, because it is a beast, has 8fps, built in grip and i can use it in a drizzle

then i chose the nikon D70s (new) because it feels good to use, has a great selection of lenses, and should keep me from needing to upgrade bodies for at least a year or so, as i grow into a DSLR

anything you would suggest/reccomend that i didnt? i wont be buying for AT LEAST 6 mos, probably longer

i though about a 5d but they are too expensive

Still its got some nice features I would like on my 20d: 3.5 stops of supersteady shot? Come on, if that works it'll be very impressive. And the dust shaker looks good.

I can't remember exactly where I read it, but I think it was one of those brief interviews that Chuck Westfall does at those conventions with an online review site, but in order to compensate for shake a FF sensor has to move over a greater distance than a cropped sensor for the same amount of shake and current technology doesn't allow for such a large sensor to move that much so fast.

Also according to the interview with Chuck on current issue of PC photo??? Chuck seems to be saying that the customers care more about noise than just MP numbers, hence the 30D, so I don't think Canon has views of a cropped sensor with more than 8MP's.

Lastly, looking at "sony" lens here http://www.letsgodigital.org …/articles/story_8382.html (external link)
Looks like Sony is rebadging the Tamron under their name like KM did, e.g. 11-18mm zoom.
I also don't know about the zeiss lenses either, since when do they make AF lenses???
The others look like rebadged KM lenses.

I think the big thing is the noise issue with the CCD. But who knows till the tests come out.

The thing I have spotted on all this, is that you have now two mechanical parts that can die, the shutter and the IS/dust shake system. Would it last 5 years? Surely but it's a concern that I have. A little more battery drain, along a CCD sensor.

But, I will wait to see the real review before making statements about the camera.
Sony was THE brand for TV and video stuff. In sound, they sucked. I don't know how they are today. Photo? I love to see what their product compares to Nikon/Canon.
It could be interesting!

Good for sony the camera seems nice are there any sample images, would it be the case that 30d is slightly a higher level camera, i think it would because of 5 frames per sec magnesium body, 8000th shutter speed right, also i think the A100 is a plastic body so would be sub1000$ class like the XT, are CCDs really that noisy, i know they use up more juice, anyways someone said that all nikons use ccds but i think the d2x uses cmos as well as the d2xs, i think i like how the cmos sensor performs but are there areas where cmos is week, hope well, :) i am sure canon will compete effectively and eventually so will nikon..:)

equipment so far, 30d, EFS 17-85, EF80-200, 75-300, cheap tripod.
