I thought the lenses in all the sony P&S and video cameras saying "Zeiss" was a joke. Those cameras never performed any better than the Canons.

Hopefully, these slr lenses will step it up. However, I don't know if I like the idea of my sensor moving around. Doesn't seem like that'd be the best idea.

I don't know if I like the idea of precision focussing lenses all jittering around inside them IS lenses, doesn't seem like that'd be the best idea...

To be quite blunt, sensor based IS is a hell of alot better an idea than lense based IS is. You could pay for an IS system once, and have it available no matter which lense you use, or you could pay for IS several times over on every IS lense you buy, have it unnavailable on some lenses and focal lengths and be limmited in your lense selection.

Which one doesn't seem like the best idea again?

Yet in a lens based system, IS can be tuned to that specific lens.

obviously the sensor moving around, GOSH!

i do like the idea of having IS on all the lenses, not just the expensive ones

So why couldn't camera firmware have the same info dependent upon which lens is attached to the camera. The camera already knows what lens is attached so it could shift between certain IS parameters.

Well, I dunno how that 'lens is best' explanation works ...

We'd need a direct shoot out to determine what approach to IS is better and that isn't going to happen because of all the variables involved. Seems to me the time to judge this system is when it hits the streets and we see some shots and read some objective reviews. Until then, mucho hot air.

Well, that didn't take long  Now this is not exactly shooting yourself in the foot, but maybe grazing the outside of the soles of your shoes.

If you go to eBay and do a search on 'sony alpha' you get entries for the PSP game "Streetfighter Alpha 3 Max" and other versions (2 max). And there is already one listing in there for a Minolta lens.

So by the time things get cranked up with Sony products and the inevitable aftermarket listings for polarizers, straps, etc. when you go to search for things for your Sony Alpha camera you will have to wade through a bunch of PS2 and PSP stuff as well. Jeez, Sony, I knew you had it in you after all.

OBTW, this also pertains to Google.

Have Fun,

Rick

I fear a Sony entry into the DSLR realm, but primarily due to my memories of the BetaMax VCR system. I can't say I'm fond of the company, but it's good to see a well-funded competitor enter the market. I wonder if they'll play the "loss leader" game to gain market share.

It will be an interesting battle. Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus - all willing participants.

I was thinking of the actual mechanicals being specifically adapted to a lens design.

Zeiss makes some of the best lenses you can buy. They were in the business before Canon even existed. They are very pricey though...
