My Rebel XT was delivered today. The outside lighting was either really harsh or not enough, so between 150 pictures these are the only two that I really like. I'd appreciate any feedback :)

I can't wait to mess around with this camera more. My S2 has been good to me, but it is time to move on to better things :D

Welcome to the forums, Sarahbeth :D
There are a couple of issues I have with the pictures, although first of all, I'd like to say what a lovely dog you've got :) . Firstly, there is a lot of shadow on the left of both pictures and secondly, the highlights on the dogs left cheek are 'burned out', that is to say, there is no detail in them. The black background is reminiscent of flash photography, but I don't get the impression that you used flash, or did you?
Try to shoot when the light is softer, to avoid the stark contrast between light and shadow, and perhaps a little fill in flash might help reduce the shadows on the side opposite the main light source.

Thank you, that is helpful. The lighting was terrible, but I was anxious to use the new camera ;) I did not use flash. The shadow on her face was beyond "repair" in photoshop so I actually made it darker, and I sort of like the effect. It's not the type of image I usually like, but I don't think it looks too bad.

Here is another one I shot in a different part of the yard. I didn't like it in color, so I desaturated it.

Welcome to POTN!:)

I think the first two look rather artistic with the harsher shadows and I would have to say that I probably prefer those two (particularly the second) to the B&W.

Great shots Sarah - keep 'em coming.

Welcome SaraBeth. Gorgeous Dog. Really like the third, desaturated one. Good DOF.

Thank you! I thought the first two were sort of artsy also, but I have no idea why the pictures turned out that way!

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is DOF?

Beautiful Dog....I really like the BW. Your dogs markings, particularly on her muzzle lends its self well to BW. Beautiful eyes in the color pics.

DOF = Depth of Field.....(I didn't know at first either) :)

I love the B&W one. The other too are a bit too harsh for me.
