Hi all,
I have a question for you all and I would like to know what you think. My camera's viewfinder and mirror just got a little dirty and I would like to clean them. Problem is: I live in a very dusty apartment, and I know if I try to clean it, more dust will fall into the camera (it has happened before).
I also do film, and this is what I do to keep dust from falling on the negs when they're hanging to dry. I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS TO A DIG-CAMERA, so I don't know if it's ok. Like most people with home darkrooms, I use my bathroom to develop my negs.
This is what I do:
While developing the negs, just b4 hanging them to dry, I walk into the bathroom and turn the hot shower on at its hottest. Wait a few minutes until the room is filled with steam. Shut the shower off. Walk out closing the door behind me immediately. Wait a few more minutes until the steam dissipates (how long will depend on how big your bathroom is). Walk back in, again closing the door behind me, and hang the negs to dry. The point is, after the steam dissipates, any dust particle in your bathroom will be wet and heavy and deposited on the floor (no longer floating around), so your room will be virtually "dust free" for a while.
I was wondering if I could use this technique to have a dust free environment to clean my camera.
I think the big issue would be the high humidity in the bathroom. But I guess if you don't walk into the bathroom while the steam is there, or take forever to clean the camera, to use this technique wouldn't be worse than having your camera out on a wet day and having to change lenses.
Let me know what you all think.
I thank you all beforehand,

Leo:D

Yes, that'll work, and is safe. You might, if things are really dusty, put the camera in a sealed plastic bag and bring it in with you when you first start the steaming process, so you don't have to open the door, possibly swirling more dust into the room as you do.

Thank you Jon,

I like the plastic bag idea. I will definitely use it.
