ICC profile generation ist the most precise way to achieve exact color reproduction but also a costly one as comercial tools cost hundreds of dollars.

Is the anybody who either knows a cheap (shareware) tool for generating ICC camera profiles from test charts or does anybody know a source for G2-ICC-profiles?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry for my ignorance but what are ICC profiles and what are they good for?

What is an ICC profile? Ok, if you have an RGB picture with a red color (255,0,0) in it. Which red color is this? The red which is displayed by your monitor? By your printer?? By my printer??? So you need a translation of color numbers into real colors. The ICC profiles are part of Windows (and Mac-OS) color management systems. These tables tell your computer, how to interpret the color numbers. For a completely color managed workflow your need ICC (or ICM) profiles for your input device (scanner, camera), monitor and printer. For the Canon G2 a first guess is to use the sRGB profile, but to get more precise colors an exact color profile would be much better.
For a deeper understanding you can find several articles on color management in the internet, for example www.adobe.com/support/techguides/color/colormanagement/cmsdef.html (external link)

Hope that helps.

If you install the demo version of Adobe Photoshop it does some neat profile setups & colour matching, which seem to stick around after it's removed (if you've got a limited/special edition to install that doesn't include the profiling...

Cheers,

So ... would this help a developing shop get better colors from your pictures?

The most important factor is to calibrate your monitor. As many printing services expect (monitor) sRGB profiled files this will lead to quite satisfying results.
The camera icc profile can improve the colors when the pictures are loaded into your computer. So you will find a better starting point for your picture manipulations.
