My 75-300mm f4-5.6 III USM has been my most faithful lens to date. It stays on the 300d for weddings and the 20d gets a work out with the other lenses. By upgrading to the 70-200 f4L, can I expect better IQ than my 75-300? I have never experienced L lenses and am not in a position to criticise or evaluate between the two. So if anyone has experienced the jump from the 75-300 f4-5.6 III USM to the 70-200 f4L please feel free to comment. I won't be going to town for another week (live in the 'wops') so I'll do all my homework now before I go try it out for myself. Cheers

hi Samnz,

yes you will see a significant change, photodo rates the lenses as follows

70-200 F4.0
http://www.photodo.com …l/CaEF70-200_4L-918.shtml (external link)

75-300 F4-5.6

Bottom line it will be sharper and have a higher contrast than your current lens.

All the best

Thanks Bear...I'm so attached to my 75-300 because it's served me well over the years. I guess it's time to step up and play with the big boys...oh, and girls. Thanks for the links too. G'nite

Agreed, having owned a 75-300 and now owning a 70-200, much sharper, more contrasty images.

With the 75-300 I was often looking at photos thinking 'nice image, pity its so soft'. With the 70-200 you end up thinking 'wow thats sharp, pity I took such a crappy photo'. :)

It depends on you. The 70-200 is a better lens. Whether you get better pictures or not depends on how you use it.

Went out this morning with the 75-300 and after capturing a few images (RAW and JPEG), I viewed them on the computer....mmmmm - for commissioned work: not good. Marginally passable for the point-and-shooter. How can I be so blind? I'll make some phone calls and will go have a LOOK at the 70-200 this morning. Thanks for all your comments. Sam

I had images from my 75-300 I considered quite usable... then I moved up to the 300 f4L ... and now it HURTS when I look back at the 75-300's pics. Not very sharp, poor contrast, etc., when compared to the finer glass.

You will certainly notice better IQ with the 70-200 L... you'll enjoy it, too, I'm sure. :)

I have an earlier version of the 75-300 as well as the 70-200 f/4. The difference in image quality between the two lenses are like night and day.

I'm in the same boat... I had a Tamron 75-300 and this new 70-200 F/4 Blows it away when it comes to IQ. The Tammy had a serious CA problem. The 70-200 is pretty impressive in that regard.

UPDATE: Well...I arrived at the shop and there 'she' was staring at me through the glass cabinet. One of the guys insisted I "try it out" - so i reluctantly obliged. YEAH RIGHT! That sucker was on my 20d faster than you could say "Don't forget to take the lens cover off!" No matter how long you've been doing photography, or how big and marvellous the lenses are, no matter how big and advanced your camera body may be --- that small piece of plastic at the end of the lens is BIG enough to make you sooo small

OK, IQ aside, this lens is gorgeous. The weight, size and looks - everything! The limiter switch and AF/MF switch fall effortlessly under the thumb (in landscape). Because I'm so use to zoom creep, it took a while to get use to the concept "stop fiddling with the filter when zoomed out - cause it's not there!" Wierd feeling.

RIGHT - IQ: CRAP! Na.....just kidding. What a remarkable difference! Even whilst looking through the lens, you can tell the image is gonna turn out before you even hit that shutter release. I can hear all those keys banging away typing "TOLD YOU SO - TOLD YOU SO!"

Finally, I have been given the go-ahead by my loving...understanding wife to purchase the lens!!! - but not till next month. So you'll be seeing alot more of me in the 70-200 f4L threads contributing my 2cents worth. Thanks for your words of wisdom everyone. Sam
