I have the opportunity to go to Turku, Finland in March or April of 2007. The Liberty of the Seas will be under construction and my work will take me to the shipyard for 10 days or so. Ample time for LOTS of photographs.

The challenge is simple - this ship is ENORMOUS. Liberty is the sister ship to Freedom of the Seas, worlds largest passenger ship. I want to get a lot of detailed shots, but I also want to get lots of exterior shots of the construction in progress at that time.

Given my current kit (below) I assume I need to go W-I-D-E. What recommendations do you have for me vis-a-vis equipment? Part of this challenge is a compromise of course. I don't want to invest in a specialty lens just for the trip, but I am willing to spend for something that would be useful thereafter (giving me landscape and similar usage).

Any suggestions, tips, pointers you might have are GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My choice for an APS-C sensor (20D/XT/30D) would be the Canon 10-22. So wide it is scary, great images and a nice landscape lens. For a FF sensor, the 17-40L would work.

Mods - If this really belongs in the Lens section, feel free to move it. Thanks - Richard

Richard,
Consider either renting the lens or purchasing for your trip and reselling. You shouldn't lose much at all on the Canon 10-22 or Tokina 12-24. They are both very popular.

Yes the way to go!

I agree on the 10-22mm, it's a great lens. If you want to go arts, consider something like a 7mm fisheye.

You want to avoid making a huge ship look small enough to fit into one picture, which can happen with a wide-angle lens. I would try using a mild telephoto to isolate one "little" consrtruction worker on the ship, maybe near the propeller or stack or something else identifiable. Also, you can shoot out from the bridge onto the deck.

Good luck!
