I'm wondering what people in here think about using digital backdrops and what they look for if they do use them. My gf and I have been working on putting some sets together to sell, but would really like to know more about what people want. We've been experimenting with some of the ones we've made, and they seem to work pretty well, but it would still be great to get as much input as possible.

Here's a couple examples of what we've used. Right now we have between 400-500 backdrops in 16bit TIFF format. Actual image size is 2048x3072.

Any thoughts? I'm always open to new ideas. We'd really like to sell some sets, but figure it would be much better if we had a better idea of the market. Thanks

I make my own. The backgrounds that you are showing here are nothing special. They appear to be shots that you have taken on your own, converted to 16bit TIFF. There are alot of people out there selling background images and just as many more where you can download for free (these are not necessarily 16bit free TIFF though).

I tend to make mine using the largest sensor that I have which is 4638X2904. So your sizing of 2048x3072 (which I'm thinking are coming from a 10D) are already too small for most people.

To be totally honest, I couldn't see myself buying anything that you have posted here. It is really easy to make yourself a 16bit TIFF from any of ones images. I think to need to have something very unique and special to make this grab peoples attention. I wish you luck.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I have taken my own pictures and used them as backdrops too, I would love to have a large collection of backdrops to choose from , but I'm too cheap to pay for it! I'm afraid I wouldn't buy them either.

But...they sure sell a lot of those CD's on ebay! That's probably where you would make some money...do a search there, they aren't that cheap!

These are more for someone like a521 I'm thinking. They aren't really intended to be used by a professional photographer with all the top of the line gear. They are really just meant to save time and effort when someone doesn't have the ideal situation or surroundings.

We also put together a 'grunge' category for doing pictures like this:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png'

This is one of mine, but my gf is WAY better at these types of effects.

Are there any specific types of backgrounds that anyone here really enjoys using? I'd like to put together a really good set, rather than just be 'average' if we are goign to sell them, whether on ebay or whatever.

We've experimented with them, but are not totally sold on them yet. Call me picky, but the "fringing" that can happen sometimes when you blend the foreground and background can be annoying to stop or clean up, especially with in-close, highly detailed images. I think the technology is definately getting better all the time, but I've rarely had the need to use them. There's been some great photoshop plugins and applications to do digital backgrounds, but a lot of them are still being considered experimental. But if you can make them work well, than kudos! It's a neat idea, definately.
