Love the colours and the eyes in the 2nd shot look pretty sharp to me.

I like the 2nd shot better. It has more detail and the colors are great.

Mark,

vast improvement! #2 is very nice, well done. I'm yet to capture one of these hoverflies. And yes, the eyes in #2 are pretty close to sharp as you'll get, sharper enough for this lad!

Did you find this hoverfly nervous and hard to get shots of, or quite placid? The only one that I've seen took off as soon as I got within 3 foot of it.

Good captures esp #2 :)
Unless they are different elsewhere, I find this species (Episyrphus balteatus) fairly easily approached especially when feeding.

Interesting Brian. I've seen 2 hoverflies in my time, one was a very blurred shot (hey, focusing at 7.30am without coffee is a big ask, right!), the other I didn't even get a chance at. It was extremely nervous. At least the first one hung around for one shot lol.

Had to do this- just went out in the garden and found one of the hoverflies and stuck my thumb in it's face whilst taking the pic- shows they are fairly unflappable though it does seem to be giving my thumb an odd look.

cool to catch your 1st of any beestie.........
i've always found hoverflys to be pretty tolerant so long as you move in slowly....

would have been better if you posted the shots a bit bigger....then we'd see even more detail

I had to laugh Brian. Do you mind flying over here and telling my local hoverflies to behave themselves and pose for me? Cos they take one look at me and they're off.

Mark - what I do is go to the Image menu, and select resize image. Make the longest length 800 pixels. I'm not sure if Adobe Elements allows you to change the resizing method, but if you can, select Bicubic Sharpness. Once that's done, simply go to the file menu, then save for web. Change the quality until the image is below 100kb. When done, click save and save it.
