I'm actually interested in knowing how much of a border others add to their 6x4s. Somebody mentioned 3/8", but I don't want the border to be too small or too large if the lab doesn't end up cropping much off. Canon 20D

Thats how I see if any part of my picture is too close to the edge and may be cropped. Then I just add a border to compensate.

Wouldn't it be easier to use an oversized border, and adjust their crop tool accordingly, sparing yourself the aggravation of adjusting the border and reuploading the file?
