The ant on the purple flower was the first day my Kenko tubes arrived- of course a very gray dim day-hence ISO800, F6.3, 1/160.

The ant on the white wall(of course) was the only living critter I could find the day my EF100 Macro arrived. Due to rookie cameraman- it took a few chimp shots to get the ant to be more visible and not blacked out by the white wall. I hope I never see another white wall shot! ISO200, F6.3, 1/30 w/camera flash.

Both shots handheld.

This is a very handy lens! I can shoot a bug in the grass and turn around and catch one of my doggies in their best doggie pose and go right back to the very small things-cool!

Back to practicing.........click, click, click

How many tubes did you have stacked on the 70-200. I was thinking of picking some up. #2 is great. especially for 1/30 handheld. Lets see some more! :)

All 3 tubes were used.

Thanks to all for the encouraging comments.

First, take this into account from the OP! -"Due to rookie cameraman"

My first few tries at higher shutter speeds gave me a very dark ant with hardly any detail visible. I assume that the preflash would reflect so much light back from the white wall that the camera would try to adjust for that and therefore underexpose the subject. I didn't want to lose any DOF, so I reduced the shutter speed until the color of the ant/details on top of his body became visible. Also the last time I tried this with a higher ISO setting, I got too much noise. So I accepted that I was probably too slow but I could easily rest my wrist and camera against the wall and hold my breath and squeeze gently!

Now that you know how I got there- can you suggest a better way under the conditions I had to get a better shot? I would be most grateful if you can- because I'm sure a bit of luck enabled me to get this shot and relying on luck is going to take a long time to learn proper photo techniques. Thanks for your observations and comments. Jim
