This monument is a statue of James Marshall, the man who discovered gold in the tailrace of the mill he was building for Captain John Sutter. That discovery started the massive "gold rush" of argonauts heading for California to search for their own gold. The statue is pointing down toward the American River where that discovery took place. It is also Marshall's headstone, as he is buried under it.

This was difficult for me. Must have taken over 100 burst mode shots to get a couple of decent one of these guys feeding:
