they do indeed. if you see them hovering it's possible to put your lens in front of them and they think the reflection in the lens is another male... and they try and chase it away (quite easy to get inflight shots of hoverflys because of that :))

Sunday I was experimenting with a homemade photo tent and an attemt to make studio lighting using flash units with umbrellas and stands. This one is overexposed but I like how it turned out anyway:
