Welcome scraps, and canblue too. I love that squirrel pic.

Hmmm - is that a red squirrel? looks like some red in the coat but the ears are not tufted.

Reds good (only eat the nuts etc). Greys baaaad. They eat the bark and kill the trees.

Hmm.. Funny. Do I have to give this thread a quick kick?

How about a cat in a basket? That's always funny!

Ignore the overzealous cloning work. I got rid if a heap-o-junk in the background. This photo was taken a few years ago, and I had limited Photshop ability.

TPBM has extensive cloning in it also, or a wildcard after 1 hour.

What is red and what is grey? When I visited up north, they had almost pitch-black squirrels. Here in TX, they're brown usually with a tan belly... Never seen a squirrel eat bark, though.

Here in the UK, there are two types of squirrel, red and grey. The red is the indigenous species and eats the pine cones, seed etc. The grey was introduced many years ago and has taken over most of the habitats as it is larger and more agressive. Reds are only found in Scotland and on the Isle of Wight over here now :(

The greys, even if they do not eat the bark, at least strip it for bedding etc. If they strip a complete circle around the tree, it kills the tree.

I got rid of a very big stop sign growing from the center of the wagon:

TPB also involved some sort of Photoshop (or equivalent software) wizardry.

An excellent job. If you didn't say anything, I wouldn't have known. In fact, I can't tell where the stop sign was!

Hmm, after a short bit of research it appears that there are 2 primary species in the U.S., the Eastern Grey, which is grey/w white belly or all black, and the Fox Squirrel, which is brownish-gray, with tan belly.

From what I've seen of the reds, they seem quite a bit smaller, about the size of a chipmunk.

Yes, that's a red squirrel caught doing the only mischievous thing I've seen him do... so far.

welcome canblue and scraps....
here's a link to a little info on red squirrels.....
http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/Redsquirrel (external link)
the one in the photo is REALLY red :)

they arn't just found in Scotland tho
Numbers in Britain: about 120,000 in Scotland, 3,000 in Wales and 15,000 in England

I think the black ones that people have seen are just melanistic gray squirrels ,the oposite of Albino) same way a black panther is just a melanistic Leopard.
