Why? It is smaller, lighter, black (instead of white) , less expensive and delievers 90% of the optical and AF performance of it's L series brother. At F8 or higher there is virtually no difference between both zooms in optical performance. Of course the L zoom is a little better wide open and build like a little bazooka.
