jamie: you know i've only had my xt for 3 weeks. you're one of my first welcomers! my nifty also broke last year, local shop told me better to buy new one than replace it. now, 2.8 vs 4.0, arrgghh. what if i get the f4 and really wanted 2.8? I know I am paying $600 for those two extra stops... i'm also considering a canon 28-135mm is usm to replace my sigma 28-105mm as a walk around.

Well I would have love to have had the 2.8 but I have too many hobbies and the budget would not stand it. If your budget will stand it, get the 2.8. I certainly have nothing bad to say about it. It's just about the benji's.

F4 to f2.8 is only one stop. You can get that by hitting your camera up for another step of ISO. Personally, I try to keep my camera at around f8 when possible, unless I'm intentionally looking for a low DOF. I love my 70-200 f4 L. I know Jamie loves his too. Honestly, most people love their f4. The people that really go for the 2.8, and the IS are the ones that shoot A LOT of low light situations, ie. concerts and weddings.

On to the subject of keeping your horizons straight... My best trick for this is to use your AF points to line up the horizon. That will get you a lot closer than just guessing. It works pretty well for me, especially on shots where I'm trying to split the image at the middle, such as reflections on a lake.

Glad you like the new 17-40 f4 L, Jamie. I think I will get one before too long. I wish I could get a bit more reach for the price though...

I'll get an L one of these days. :)

I'm hoping to have one before June of '07 when I go to Scotland. I just can't decide if I want the 70-200 or the 17-40. I'm leaning towards the 70-200 f4 since I find myself wanting MORE reach with the 18-55. 17-40 would give me the same problem.

Stop that Brad. I don't want a 24-70L. I have a 28-90 That serves me well. Besides too many people have get bad copies and have to send them back. :D
*you do hear me talking myself out of the 24-70 right?*

It will be at least a year for me, too. Hubby says I gotta finish paying for the camera before I get the "caddy" glass:evil:
So, I try not to read to many L posts or look to hard at B&H:rolleyes: I haven't decided either if I want wide or reach for L number one...decisions
