Thanks Athena. I had lots of time to think as I relaxed on the top of the hill waiting for the right light for about an hour, with my big tripod and camera standing proudly on display. A lovely way to spend a quiet evening of contemplation. :)

Good morning everyone, I made through the first 10 of 20 pages from last night and I'm ROFLMAO, can't finish the next 10 as there are T-Storms rolling in and out. I need shut down totally for risk of power surge greater than my surger can handle. I may have to come home during lunch hour to finish catching up. Big Brother is watching at the office anymore so I don't get to read there, which really sucks.

what a lovely animal and a nice shot too.

I don't mean to offend but going to the zoo to take shots of these majestic creatures isn't helping matters.
zoos are the rape of the natural world in my opinion. and they should be boycotted by all in a 21st century so called civilized world.

soon the only tigers left will be in zoos.... does this make the zoo a good thing.....hell no it's their fault the decline started in the 1st place      (well not just zoos the chinese medicine trade has the most blame on it's shoulders)

Hmmmmm, not sure I entirely agree with you on that point. There may have been something in what you are saying 30-50 years ago. But I am sure that most respectable zoos (Can't talk for all zoos in the world) try to source most of there stock from animals bread in zoos and animals rescued from captivity or being kept, then abandoned as pets, and are too domesticated to return to the wild. I would think that in general, for them to aquire stock from the wild there has to be a fairly solid conservation justification behind it, ie if they don't breed the animal in a zoo it will cease to exist in the not too distant future. Oh, and I do know of cases of wild animals ending up in zoos because they where posing a serious threat to human populations, and it was a case of putting it in a zoo before somebody killed it or was killed by it (Thinking specifically of crocodiles in Australia which are no longer an endagered species, but where in the 60's and 70's).

But I am no expert in this area, and could be completely wrong. But even if I am completely wrong, the impact of zoos removing animals from the wild would be miniscule compared to the pressure placed on wild populations by destruction of habitat and poaching (whether for skins, chinese medicine, domestication, to stop them eating crops or whatever).

I'm not a big fan of seeing animals in cages, and tend not to go to zoos for that reason. But I do support the conservation work that they do in an enfort to save animals that our uncontrolled population growth is whiping out.

I can see this topic livening up TPBM a little.:lol:

woodsie i agree in part.......but i didn't mean that zoos get their stock from the wild..........
just that zoos in the begining did so they started the trend.
zoos nowadays make people interested in these animals and want them........or part of them..........

conservation nowadays is a good thing but i don't think zoos are the way to do it.

IMO there is no such thing as a respectable zoo....... there is nothing in the least respectable in keeping animals locked in cages

I can see the thread on the main menu in POTN and click on the hyperlink. The hyperlink resolves to a black white screen that appears to be searching for the page.

I contacted the webmaster who may get back to me sometime.
