Hmmmmm, not sure I entirely agree with you on that point. There may have been something in what you are saying 30-50 years ago. But I am sure that most respectable zoos (Can't talk for all zoos in the world) try to source most of there stock from animals bread in zoos and animals rescued from captivity or being kept, then abandoned as pets, and are too domesticated to return to the wild. I would think that in general, for them to aquire stock from the wild there has to be a fairly solid conservation justification behind it, ie if they don't breed the animal in a zoo it will cease to exist in the not too distant future. Oh, and I do know of cases of wild animals ending up in zoos because they where posing a serious threat to human populations, and it was a case of putting it in a zoo before somebody killed it or was killed by it (Thinking specifically of crocodiles in Australia which are no longer an endagered species, but where in the 60's and 70's).

But I am no expert in this area, and could be completely wrong. But even if I am completely wrong, the impact of zoos removing animals from the wild would be miniscule compared to the pressure placed on wild populations by destruction of habitat and poaching (whether for skins, chinese medicine, domestication, to stop them eating crops or whatever).

I'm not a big fan of seeing animals in cages, and tend not to go to zoos for that reason. But I do support the conservation work that they do in an enfort to save animals that our uncontrolled population growth is whiping out.

I can see this topic livening up TPBM a little.:lol:

there are only 1500 wild tigers left... a very sad an scary thought -

the tiger in the picture and two of his brothers are part of a captive breeding pro gramme. It is planned that his cubs one day will be able to roam free and wild once more. this tiger has help in education of the plight of these magnificent creatures. whilst i would love to see him free in the wild, he and the few others that remain are the only hope the have to avoid the end.

The best way to save these creatures is to know them - we have learned so much about them here in close quarters. Now we must give them the space and habitat to live free. its not zoo's that need to be attacked - its governments.

and yes woodsie it does work and thank you for the support. its great that a picture can get people talking. And who knows maybe in 20 years i maybe able to photograph the tiger in the wild. Lets hope my kids can thou if i cant.

Unfortunately these frogs often get mauled by our nieghbourhood cats - this is supposed to be a cat exclusion zone . Surrounding areas are supposed to have a curfew.

So I guess these qualify as the cats dinner !

How nice of you to think of Athena's spider "issue" lol.

I was working next to the National Zoo in D.C. the other day. I hate seeing the animals there although they do work on conservation and research. I snapped a few pictures and left inside an hour.

I just stopped by for a few minutes to see what was up. To all good morning, afternoon, or night as is appropriate.
