Which is as it should be I think, for better or worse he made the call, and unless another Ref can contradict it he shouldn't even look. At least until the game is over that is. Thanks for looking!

It's clear to fans on the first base line that the runner was safe; however, the umpire observed the play from an entirely different angle and his view might have been blocked. On close plays at first base umps rely on the two different sounds that they hear -- the pop when the ball hits the first baseman's glove vs the crunch of the base runner's foot on the bag. With a play this close and if the ump happened to be on the second base side of first base (which is where he should be if there's another runner on base) it's possible that he actually heard the pop before the crunch -- especially if the loudest part of the crunch sound occured when the runner's toes came down on top of the base. If so then the ump will swear he called it correctly until he sees this pic. Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

Most won't even laugh about reviewing their call even if your joking. Nice shot. Makes me hurt to look at it! www.richardkimberley.com

In my experience over the years with baseball officials, I have seen very good umpires and very bad umpires. The very bad umpires consistently make bad calls and won't get help from any other ump to make correct a disputable call. The good ones will consistently make the right calls on the fireld and behind the plate and when there is a questionable call, they huddle to determine who had the best angle and come up with the right decision. Don't you wish all high school games would be played in the day time?

I'll "critique" it from an Umpire perspective...looks like there could be a question of his foot still touching the bag...I would have to be at the right angle to make that call...just an umpire point of view. Although, something that makes everyone think he or she has blown the call this bad, should have been appealed by the coach and then discussed among the umps!
