In my experience in H.S. football; the Refs/Umps wont look when someone tried to show him. Which is as it should be I think, for better or worse he made the call, and unless another Ref can contradict it he shouldn't even look. At least until the game is over that is.

The guy I shoot for has been doing this for years, and I know he's sent the ref association pics / tape to be used for training purposes before.

Thanks for looking!

First off..... nicely timed shot... and great attempt by the first baseman... dang good stuff. Just wish it was larger.

To the side story.... I was shooting a college football game where I was standing near the line of scrimage, and just after a play I was chimping as I usually do and made a comment out loud accidently that the back judge missed a face mask. The line judge overheard me and asked to see... he tool a look, and then call the head ref over - he popped a look - said "woops"... and then ran back to the middle of the field. From then on last year when that crew and I ended up at the same games, they would always joke with me asking if I had any incriminating shots of them. It was all fun.

Great capture and that's a major league stretch by the first baseman. It's clear to fans on the first base line that the runner was safe; however, the umpire observed the play from an entirely different angle and his view might have been blocked. On close plays at first base umps rely on the two different sounds that they hear -- the pop when the ball hits the first baseman's glove vs the crunch of the base runner's foot on the bag. With a play this close and if the ump happened to be on the second base side of first base (which is where he should be if there's another runner on base) it's possible that he actually heard the pop before the crunch -- especially if the loudest part of the crunch sound occured when the runner's toes came down on top of the base. If so then the ump will swear he called it correctly until he sees this pic.

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

Yea. Try and show an ump your pic to dispute him and see how red faced he will get. Most won't even laugh about reviewing their call even if your joking. Nice shot. Makes me hurt to look at it!

That's a great shot. In my experience over the years with baseball officials, I have seen very good umpires and very bad umpires. The very bad umpires consistently make bad calls and won't get help from any other ump to make correct a disputable call. The good ones will consistently make the right calls on the fireld and behind the plate and when there is a questionable call, they huddle to determine who had the best angle and come up with the right decision.

Here's a play the ump called safe, ball is in the 1st baseman's glove, he never dropped it or bobbled it and there was no conference after the call.

Don't you wish all high school games would be played in the day time?

Last game I shot one of the coaches took my camera over to the ump to show him a called strike, the ball was frozen at the kids shoulder and clearly a ball. The ump didnt like that, ha...the coach and ump were frirends however so it was all in fun...

In a professional game (Major Leagues) the umpires all missed the call, they actually went over and looked at it through someones camera and made the call...probably about 2 years ago or something, game was on TV and they showed the umps go over and "review".

Great picture! I'll "critique" it from an Umpire perspective...looks like there could be a question of his foot still touching the bag...I would have to be at the right angle to make that call...just an umpire point of view. Although, something that makes everyone think he or she has blown the call this bad, should have been appealed by the coach and then discussed among the umps! :D
