horror story # 2 I was at Niagara falls ( way at the top), had my 300d on the tripod and some little jerk ( I say that because he was extremely unruly and rude to everybody around) shoves my camera away so he can walk on the ledge, the camera and tripod go over the edge... I catch the leg of the tripod, about falling over the ledge.. The kid does start to fall over the ledge and some guy grabs his legs.. Both would have surely met an untimely end as it is a couple hundred feet down to the rocks..... But thanks to a whole lot of luck both walked away.. I wanted to smack that kid soooooobad, but his dad did it for me..

The tripod deal. When I am shooting macros, a lot of times I will scout an area and find a flower or something that is getting landed on a lot. I just set up, dial in, focus on a the landing aea and wait for something else to land. I try chasing them around sometimes, but I seem to have better luck doing it the other way...

Thanks for the info, I will try that next time.

Here is a pic of a grasshopper I found.

Thanks,

The best way is to start quite a ways back, take a few shots, then just get closer and closer. Take it SLOW, and the bug will ussually settle if you just give it time.

This actually is a great idea. I know that it works with birds. It isn't macro, but I started out about 50 feet from a Mourning Dove one time and over about a five minute period, I ended up slowly moving towards the bird and got within 10 feet before it took off. They are normally very jumpy.

Working with bugs when doing macro will generally work the same way. Just have patience and when the bug gets used to you, you can get that great shot. :)

I'm going to be the rebel...

I use my 70-200mm F2.8 IS with closeup filters. Yes its big, but with a tripod or monopod who cares and the IS helps when trying to get subjects that move. It also helps when trying to get subjects that get spooked when you get close.
