So here is the deal. I got my Tokina12-24 and love it but I am confused about the depth of feild on it. I take a pic at F4.0 and then at f22 well the background should be not in detail at f4.0 right? Well when I take the same pic at f22 it sharpens up. I did a little test. I used the same shutter speed and moved the apeture from 4.0 up to 22 and every pic was a stop darker for every f stop. That means nothing is wrong right? Other than that the lens is really sharp. Way more sharp then the 80 dollar tamron 28-80 I was using... Sorry if this dosent make sense. hehe.

wide angle lenses (your 12-24) give you a far greater depth of field. take a look at a depth of field calculator (external link) to see what to expect at various f stops etc.

Canon EOS 350D, Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6, 24-105 f4L IS, 70-200 f4L, 300 f4L IS, Kenko 1.4x pro300, 430EX, Apple Powerbook G4

Even at the closing focusing point, the depth of field on my 8mm fisheye is almost infinite even at f/11. I'd imagine that its about the same on your ultra wide zoom. The shorter the focal length, the harder it is to "throw out" the background.

Yeah, at F4 some time the DOF is pretty far unless you're taking close up. On the other hand with the angle so wide, you can handhold with pretty slow shutter

This one is at F4 1/40 ISO 3200

The first time I was out shooting with this lens, I completely forgot to have a high f stop for beter DOF. When I got home looked at the pictures I was so disappointed. Then I remembered and instead of saying DOF I almost said Doh!

Its a fantastic lens and IMO a much better lens then the Canon or Sigma UWA lenses. I might be selling mine though. But I will have to think about it carefully because it is such an awesome lens and L quality build.

DON'T DO IT MAN....JUST DON'T.... you wouldn't be able to live yourself, I know I wouldn't...unless of course I was getting a 5D or 1DsMKII...even then this is such a good lens I would keep my 350D for it. :)
