No pic I'm afraid- just a story. Last year I thought, but was not certain, that I caught a glimpse of a hummingbird moth. Never spotted one again until yesterday- just coming in from the front garden when I saw one feeding on a perennial Echium. I just watched it completely gobsmacked (me not the moth) feeding on flowers for about 15 seconds before it flew off. Never even tried taking a pic (had the camera in my hand).
Anyone else had a similar experience ?

hehehe Brian, I can't say that I've had that experience with a moth, but a few girls have done it for me ;)

2 years ago I had the pleasure of seeing quite a few at this one overlook on Skyline Drive (in Virginia). The next weekend I specifically drove 3 hours, back up there, with the intentions of finding and imaging as many as I could come across, since the milkweed blossoms were in full bloom. But I didn't find a one... haven't come across one, since. :(
They are gorgeous creatures... how cool that you found it in your own garden. :)

The first time I saw a hummingbird moth was before I had a camera, but I reacted much the same way. I had no idea what I was looking at and was completely transfixed.

I *did* have a similar experience with a turtle. :) I was driving through a park I drive through daily and noticed this huge critter (14-16" diameter) trying to get up on the road, with evidence it had tried several other spots without success. I was so concerned about it being successful and consequently getting run over :( and wondering whether I should try to turn it around or move it... Didn't occur to me until some time later that I should have taken a picture of the dang thing. (I ended up leaving a note on the gate to the park office (it was round 5am) letting them know where I saw it and trusting they would know the best course of action.)

Obviously not the onlky one then. Interestingly enough I had a look today about the same time (3pm) where I saw it Yesterday and it turned up again. Had my 105mm ex with 33mm of tubes on and couldn't get near enough for a shot. I'll see if it turns up tomorrow and will be ready with my 200mm lens :)
