Just as a coincidence I as reading in a post on the fly ID forum I use that hovers are nowhere near as common down there as they are in the UK. So it's not you

Dang! I've seen 4 hoverflies in the past week and a bit. One was similar to the ones you've got, yellow/black in colour on the abdomen. It was extremely nervous, couldn't get within 4 feet of it without it leaving at high pace. I saw a 2nd one on Saturday, couldn't get near him cos he was 12 feet in the air and wouldn't come down to eye level for me. And another 2 on Sunday, these were a bit smaller and had black/white stripes on their abdomens. These were very very fast and wouldn't simply stay still, despite Angie being patient with me and letting me have a crack at them for 20 odd minutes of pure and utter frustration. The working distance on the Sigma 150mm is a pain in this aspect as it's harder to get the insects in the frame, by the time I do they zoom out of the viewfinder. Twice I had quite good shots and was about to take the shot when zoom...gone. I ended up trying to just judge the working distance and framing and take the shot without the eye behind the viewfinder (almost certainly guaranteed to fail). In the end I got 1 shot, and that's just totally crappy...see attached...
