That's a really nice shot. The only thing I'd have done differently is have more space on the right of the frame - where she's looking, so have maybe 2/3 space on the right

Another little trick that works well, is it generally works better for people who read from left to right, to have photos going from left to right - e.g. as your shot is, with subjects on the left of the frame, looking into empty space on the right.

Great pic! i love how you were able to blur the background. I read in many books on how to do this but it just won't come out right. It's either my subject is too close to the background, i am took close to the subject, or I am just plain old stupid.

I have the Canon 350D Rebel XT and I try, and try, and try just to take a couple of portraits of my neice and I cannot get her to the foreground of the picture. When I first got the camera, it did happen. I just didn't notice it until I printed the picture. However, i didn't want her freckles or teenage bumps on her face to show. So, i switch the photo into black and white. I will post it at the end of this page. BUT, please note that the picture above is great! Nice! and I love it. I just can't do it. I don't have any other lens or accessories with my camera. please help.

Canon workshop does start until september 2006.

see below. I also love the way you move her to the left of the picture.

The blur is caused by a small depth of field. Depth of field is basically - how much is in focus. It is related to focal length, aperture, and distance to subject. Basically - the larger the aperture (smaller number), the longer the focal length, and the closer to the subject you are, the smaller the depth of field, so more blur.

Even with the kit lens, if you get really close to the subject, and have them as far away from a background as possible, you can still get a nice background blur.
