The only thing I'd have done differently is have more space on the right of the frame - where she's looking, so have maybe 2/3 space on the right D7100, 50mm f/1.8, 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6, 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR, SB800

I read in many books on how to do this but it just won't come out right. It's either my subject is too close to the background, i am took close to the subject, or I am just plain old stupid. Depth of field is basically - how much is in focus. It is related to focal length, aperture, and distance to subject. Basically - the larger the aperture (smaller number), the longer the focal length, and the closer to the subject you are, the smaller the depth of field, so more blur.
