I mainly shoot drag racing and I was wondering if there is a way to get the motion trail effect during the day. I have seen this on many night time photos and wondered if it can be done during the day or later in the day maybe around dusk?

I am guessing here because I am still learning; slow shutter speed combined with using 2nd curtain?

If anyone could tell me if I may be on the right track or not that would be great. I am going to experiment some this weekend and see what I get. I just wondered if anyone else has done this and been successful with it.

Thank you.

you'll prob need a bunch of ND filters as well depending on how bright it is. (these cut down light, allowing you to use slower shutter speeds).

but looking at how fast those cars go you might be able to get by just stopping down! experiment!

2nd curtain sync will fire the flash at the end of the exposure giving you a trail up to the point the flash goes off, however on a bright day i doubt this is going to do anything unless you have a flashgun the size of a planet.

good luck.

ND filters may be give you what you want with a combination of a low ISO. I haven't seen too much of this of daytime motorsports. The daytime effect that I like is the background motion blur by those photographers that are adept at panning and getting the subject in focus and getting the motion blur of the background.

You can simulate motion blur to a degree using the photoshop filter motion blur.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Are you by chance referring to this type of effect?

On shooting sports...If you see it happen then you didn't get it.

Yes that would be it. I am not looking to do it in post processing. I shoot jpeg and do very little work afterwards if at all possible.
