While I was in D.C., I also tried experimenting with HDR on some other familiar landmarks. This is harder than you'd think, as you have to avoid the attention of the park police, who get a bit fidgety about tripods. All were shot using 6 shots bracketed at 2 stops apart, assembled and downconverted with Photoshop, with the exception of the Capitol, which was shot on a 3 shot bracket, untripoded, because the police made me put the tripod away. The camera is an EOS 20D, the wide lens is a Canon EF 10-22, the lone telephoto is a Sigma 70-200. The success if varying. The Lincoln Memorial looks a bit wonky, but keep in mind that the sun is in the process of setting just to the right of where the frame cuts off -- this is shooting into the sun. HDR does a pretty good job of managing this!

nicely done. what software are you using for the 32-bit conversion?

the dynamic range of the 3rd shot looks fantastic. very realistic, natural lighting without any of the tell-tale haloing of poorly processed HDR's.

Wow, those are great. I doubt Nifty is going to get shots that good this week. :)

Thank you so much. I have not ever been to DC. The sites are national treasures. I enjoy seeing treasures. Thank you again for posting and sharing your experience. Made my day... I really like all your posts. Really makes me wonder what you did not post.

3 & 4 are superb.

Though I'm curious as to why the Parks Police are hesitant of tripods?! Do they think they're WMDs? Are they over cautious on security?

I'm not sure, though I'm guessing it has something to do with liability. i.e., if someone trips on a tripod, they're worried they might be liable. Outside of that, I have no idea -- guns are usually mounted on bipods, not tripods, and I doubt they're worried about people attacking each other with three-legged clubs. They don't let you take photos in the subways anymore, either -- the whole place has gone a little crazy.

Holy God, that's paranoid draconianism right there.
No offense to those living in the US, but I sure am glad I'm not there. You might have a stunningly beautiful country, but your authorities are scary.
