I'm sure you know the first is a Monarch. It's a great photo.

Thanks Rubberhead. I'll profess total ignorance and say no, I didn't realize it. Which is sad since there's a "butterfly farm" in the open space behind my house where they migrate through. I guess I've just never seen one

Sorry for being presumptuous - I thought you were being light-hearted about not knowing the first butterfly. It is a great photo of a butterfly that many of us would love to get a good shot of.

The Monarch is the king of butterflies and, I assumed, the most recognizable species.

No worries, Rubberhead, you weren't being presumptuous. I'm glad to know what it is and I'll never forget now. I don't know how I've ever missed seeing one before, apparently they're all over. Thank you for your kind comments Reigh and Nathalie

Here's a link to a photo of a Monarch mimic called a Viceroy Butterfly.

http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=182122

Monarchs taste very bad because of their diet as a caterpillar (milkweeds). Any bird that tries to eat a Monarch learns a quick lesson that Monarch’s are unpalatable. Scientists believe that Viceroy’s mimic this to avoid being eaten.

I just haven’t heard what happens if a bird tries a Viceroy first?

Thank you Tim

and actually no, I didn't use the macro, I used the 300 f/4 since I was out at a wildlife preserve and was travelling light with only that one lens.
