Dear everyone,

I have some question about how do you make children smile for taking photograph. I have to take some pictures of my friend's children. They are around 5-10 years old. Please give me some suggestion.

Patrick..

Be a retard. Make faces, sounds, etc. It's not video so you can get away with the noises. If you aren't good at it, have one of the parents do it directly behind you.

Brussels sprouts?

No, wait, that's how you make them gag . . .

I guess I don't know. Children run from me, and that's not a bad thing . . .

Get mum or dad involved, be silly, i use a method called smelly feet...instead of getting them to say cheese get them to say "Mum has smelly feet" i dont necessarily snap the shot while they are saying it but it makes them laugh.
Talk to them - ask questions as your snapping like hows school, do you liek to draw etc.
i just purchased a fart machine lol well ok it was for ME - i have been calling my friends and using it (I am 24 and female....i WAS the class clown in school haha) anyway i also figured its a good investment as boys especially think its hilarious at age 5-10, ill use that and make them laugh

That is... one of the best pieces of advice I've seen on this forum. Good Children Photographers are not the ones with the best equipment or the ones that can get the perfect exposure all the time.... the absolute BEST children photographers I have seen... are the ones that can make the kids laugh....

Leo.

For 5-10 year olds, boys at least, say something gross like bathroom talk and they will respond. For some stupid reason, my boys love that. Oh, and the lightsphere is really silly looking. My sons think I'm joking every time I take it out. Doesn't make them laugh, but they get that look like, "Mom's crazy again!"

My children and grandchildren are the reason, but it's the passion that drives me to get the perfect image of everything.

Ask a little girl to tell you if she has a favorite Dolly, and to talk about it! Brightens up the most lens-shy girls!

Thanks Leo :) i am only just starting out with portraits - i photograph my neices and nephews all of the time, but have only just started charging clients for my portraits ( I work mainly in weddings but wanted a sideline too)
So i am quite chuffed that you said that about me :) Thank you!

It is important to get children to have a good time - that is what you are there for, to take their photo but make it fun for them. Liek i said - children love me and i have no idea why, im 24, married, biological clock is ticking and i SO DONT WANT CHILDREN lol
But i love other people's children? Wierd i know!

You need the personality also to be a photographer in my books...who wants a photographer that yells at you or is too shy to tell you how to pose or talk to lol

Gerry...i bought the fart machine from our book club, at work we have 2 book companies come through and let us borrow the books (And gimmicks) for 2 weeks, and we purcahse them if we want. I purchased 2 fart machines this fortnight hahaha
