The rose is nice, but the lighting is flat. However, for me the main problem is the framing - the rose being exactly in the centre of the fram is not good and even more so is the pot in the background, very distracting.

Well, only part of the rose is "exactly in the center" of the frame. Which part of the rose don't you like where it is? Are you trying to say that you subscribe to the "rule" of thirds which is not really a rule--just some peoples preference?

You are completely correct and the rule of thirds is not a rule at all, just a preference. I must admit to using it more often than not, but it all depends on the subject, conditions, etc.

My main point about this image is the pot in the background, which is very distracting, especially directly behind the rose.

it was a heavy pot.. or else i could have moved it out the way... sadly the flower withered away a week ago
