Ray,

Just press the shutter half way before taking the picture this will confirm auto focus.

Hope this helps

How close is the subject when you do this?
If you are doing closeups you can be too close for the lens to focus.
If it is a distance shot and you have any amount of camera shake it can have trouble locking on.
if the subject is lacking in contrast, you can also have trouble.

That is the best way.

But you can manual focus using the scale, if you are good at estimating.
I estimate mostly for sports pictures, as it cuts down on shutter lag.

Ray,

Do you have an example you can post of bad pictures youre getting? By playing with apperture you may be getting to slow shutter speeds for handheld camera. If that is the case it could be
more of a motion blur than a focus problem.

Cheers

What about light conditions? If it's not enough light, you always have difficulties with focusing, also try to move the frame somewhere on the border of light in object, it will help to focus.

I now, to shoot open air portraits use ONLY AV mode (with widest aperture) and full zoom to separate object from background and have no problem to focus in good light conditions.

But when I do macro shots, especially with macro filter (+4) I use only manual, it's almost impossible to focus on full zoom macro. So it's better to move camera back and forth to focus.

Try this...

Hold the shutter button down half way `til you get focus. Then, while holding the shutter button, hit the manual focus button. This will lock the current focus plane for any number of shots there after until you cancel manual focus. It's a bit awkward at first but you'll get the hang of it.
