I'm really contemplating picking up a 24-70 L 2.8 for my live music shots as well as some fashion/glamour that I am working on. Does anyone have any experience with this lens in low-light situations or will I still be using my 50mm 1.4 and 20mm 1.8 alot?

This is the lens I use almost all the time in the clubs where I shoot. In some of the larger venues I use a different lens. When I shot film I barely used this lens but with the digital conversion, this had become my staple.

I use my 24-70L for gigs. I usually put the iso up to 1600 and then I can get away with shutter speeds around 50-80 depending on the lighting so camera shake isn't that obvious.

Here is one I took last night. It technically wasn't a gig I was just doing shots for their album.

That was at iso 1600, f/2.8 , 1/60s.

edit, I also did a bit of photoshop to reduce some of the noise.

The other point I would make is if you are going to buy the 70-200 IT IS A MUST THAT YOU GET IT WITH "IS"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, Chris, but I disagree.

This was shot with the 70-200mm f/2.8L (non-IS), about 25 feet from the stage:

Yeah, IS certainly has some very obvious and valuable benefits. But it's certainly not a "must"...

Well, if there's one thing for sure, don't make a blanket statement or say "must" at POTN because we have some of the most argumentative folks in the world participating here and they just cannot leave anything alone.

Steve,

I guess I forgot that when I said "must" I was thinking about "us" photographers who don't get to shoot in "PERFECT LIGHT"! There is no arguing the extra stops it gives you relative to keeping your shutter speed up. That we can all agree on!
