Melbourne Zoo? If so, they only have a boy, whose name is Menyaru. Maybe it's um, hidden :)

Yep, he's a boy then. That's Menyaru alright. I got there all time :)
His mum who you often see with a sheet over her, is Maimunah I think, and his dad is the big male orang, Santan. Love the orangs, they are beautiful and you have captured him well.

You want a mostly cloudy sky, any sun and you will have a lot of trouble in the Gorilla enclosure and with the orangs, as it reflects badly.

Weekdays are better, but some weekends that aren't crash hot weather is good too.

Go at feeding times too! Best to visit the lions at around 11, the Tiger at around 2/2.30, and I think the Gorillas at about 3.30.

This is my melbourne and werribe zoo gallery - http://www.pbase.com/durberville/zoo_animals (external link)

You got some good shots, love the wrens. If you go to werribee in summer there are TONS of them.

Nat you are a beautiful photographer, some amazing shots! how did you get them to have that real soft looking light? the day we went had really bright light with harsh shadows and loads of kids.

Are you a member of something at the zoo? my wife and I plan to go once a month. We were a bit disapointed with werriebee however we are going to go on the 4wd tour next time, its slower and in a ute, like a real safari.

Regards Darren

Always wait for the right light! hehe. I've been to the zoo heaps of times so I take many and can afford to just wait until the next visit :)

I'm a member of FOTZ...friends of the zoo. You pay I think, $80 and then you can free entry as many times as you like in one year.

I've been on the safari tour at werribee twice and it's great - but don't go in summer because the flies in werribee can be terrible and the light gets harsh. The morning tour in spring is perfect :)

I don't recommend the lion tour at werribee for photography though, there is a big bar across the whole time.

G'day Nat,

At weribee now you get to see lions through glass, here is a shot through glass, not a great photo but through glass is possible.

Was a member a FOTZ when I was a kid, does id give access to all 3 zoos?

Regards Darren

P.S. Dragonfly Spirit,

you will love the zoo, and Nats shots are wonderful.
