workshop vs classes

I always see classes that teach photography.
Then again, I met a photographer and told me to take a workshop instead...

sorry for the noob question, but whats the difference?

a workshop is a short term (usually a day or weekend) about a specific area of intrest or technology. workshops are often taught by famous or up and coming photographers

a class is going to be a broader and longer overview of photography, and you're more likely to have critiques and interaction, but from a lesser teacher. the teachers are often retired photogs looking for extra income

Classes are for in depth learning at a general interest level. You are likely to retain more knowledge from a class.

Workshops are for focused learning. You are likely to learn more interesting thinks in a workshop.

If you need general skills improvement take a class.
If you need to only improve one specific area or need a refresher, aim for a workshop.

Just my opinion,

IMO Classes are a lot of theory and minimal hands on experience, workshops you have to squeeze into a few days or even just one day - so lots of hands on experience and explanations of what exactly your doing!!!

I have done HEAPS of workshops....not many classes...

PS: Workshops usually focus on one thing too eg. "Weddings" "Portraits" "Beginner" "Advanced" etc. where as classes for me were a whole heap of stuff over a period of a month or 2...
