I am looking a getting one of these monopods. Has anyone tried out both? I would like the lighter one for portability and I am sure it would work great for my 100-400. I would likely be getting a heavier lens in time, though that time could be a year or two out and I could worry about it at that time. The other concern might be the height. I am 6'0" (183cm) and the 1401 is 5'4" (163cm) but I would imagine that the ballhead and camera height up to the viewfinder would make up the difference (that and my eyes are part wat down my head too).

Would the stiffness of the 1471 be a better choice, at 1.5 lbs without head it is twice as heavy as the 1401 and can hold 4 kg more weight (though like I said is not a great advantage right now), though the extra .7 lbs is not likely to be much of an issue.

I'm thinkin' of getting the Bogen 486RC2 ballhead as it seems to get great praise around here, though still open to suggestions. I definitely want a ball head as I use a monopod for macro sometimes and get it into some real weird positions.

Thoughts?

Although I have not used the 1471, I have the 1401. It is very rugged and I really like it. I have a Manfrotto 486RC2 on it. I am 5' 9 3/4" and I never have it extended fully. I take it everywhere with me, which is the joy of having something light like this. If it gets taken, it gets used.

I used to have the 1401 and now have 1471.

The 1471 is a beast in size (particularly it's tube circumference) and the extra weight will make a difference over the 1401 when packed in with the rest of your gear. I guess it's not so much the extra weight that's a problem just the extra bulk of it. If you can get to a monopod shop to give you an idea the 1401 would be equivalent in tube circumference to most of the mid weight monopods you see while the 1471 would be equivalent to a Gitzo G-1588. I just measured the circumference of the padded area of the 1471 and it's 15cm (upper section tube is 11.6 cm). I'd guess the 1401 is around 2/3 of these figures.

Build quality on both are awesome with nicer screws on the 1471. One thing to bear in mind is that the top plate on the 1401 isn't that great. It's a cheap plastic compared to the metal and larger plate of the 1471.

With your current setup the 1401 would be more than adequate. The thing I've found with quality tripod/monopod manufacturer's is their understatement of max load weighting so I think you'd be good for any setup that exceeds their rating by a couple of kgs. For my purposes (weights similar to yours) the 1471 is overkill.

The bulkiness would be an issue I had never thought of and the fact that the 1401 would then be more likely taken alone would be a good points kinda confirms my first thought, to go with the 1401.

I have the 1471 and it is my first Monopod. I don't feel that it is bulky or heavy, but I also don't have anything to compare it to.

I use it with my 100-400 and it works fine. I'm 6'5"and don't have a head on it and I still don't extend it all the way.

I have the 1471 and I'm 6'.

I love it and use it everywhere, as much as possible. Good buying too.
