I’m looking for input for a photo project. My 11-year-old daughter wants to enter a school sponsored art contest. One of the divisions is photography. She would like to go around our neighborhood and take pictures of all the cats that live here (about 20-25).

The shots will be taken outdoors in the late afternoon (low sun). She’ll be using equipment listed in my signature. The shots will most likely be hand held unless the beasts are close and very still. This will take many trips.

I told her she needed to come up with a composition that the judges will like. In her young mind, all the cats are her friends with names and personalities. She sketched out a layout that looked like a thumbnail contact sheet with names of each cat under each image. That might work if it’s done artistically (I guess). She has to do all the work hands on. It’s the rules.

In my mind, I would like to see the cats presented as though they are part of the community or for her to compose the shots to emphasize their character.

If anyone has ideas to share, I will pass it to her. Thank you much.

Maybe a family tree layout with the tree somehow representing the neighborhood.

Like the maps in Google Earth? A visual layout of the neighborhood with "clickable" thumbnails and then info on the cat and a bigger picture?

P.
PS. Cats are notoriously difficult to take good pictures of... completely selfish animals.
