I finally ended up getting the impact radio slave remotes......it was the cheapest one in BH.....for a grand total of 124. The microlite?? and PW were 300 and up. YIKES!!! The build quality is not so great.....but it works!!! And no need of any batteries.......

I tried that and it didn't work with the ste2......or I would've been set.

Have you tried using the 580EX in manual mode instead? You can set the power very low so that it doesn't contribute any lighting to the shot but it will trigger the ABs without a problem.

Of course, if you're going to be using the strobe outdoors and need more range than optical triggering will provide, then radio is the way to go. In that case, have you looked at the less expensive alternatives to PW, such as the Bowen Pulsar radio remotes? I personally don't have any experience with them but they are supposedly good alternatives from what I've read. Not as good as the PWs, of course, but good enough to get the job done.

I've tried the 580 but its not so reliable........and its a bit heavy on top of a 1 series.

Just an update though, the cheap impact radio slave really worked great today!!! It was on target the whole time.
