These are called Daddy Long Leggers here, they are completely harmless and docile. The children pick them up and hold them.

We called them grand daddy long legs when I was growing up. I used to see lots of them in Sacramento, but then I didn't see many for a while. I seem to see lots of them periodically, and then I won't see them for a while. I believe their common name is "harvestmen". They are harmless unless you are an aphid or other small bug. They look very different from spiders in that they do not have any clear division between the head and abdomen as a spider does. We used to love to play with them. I'm sure they weren't having near as much fun as we were. LOL
