I just got these ready to go.

Let me know what you think.

Wow... (Absolutely no post processing done to this one -- no cropping, no nothing. Straight out of the camera as a JPEG [I normally shoot RAW, but someone told me to try the sport mode for birds in flight and it automatically goes to JPEG when you do that])

Hands down, yesterday was my best bird day ever!

Brilliant shots.
In second shot some pelican will have to tell the pelican, second from left to get into sync. But honestly you couldn't have got the moment any better.

Thank you so much everyone for your comments.

Tony, nobody has ever, to my knowledge, described on of my images as "brilliant." You just made my day!!! Thank you.

Hi there,

really nice shots, they are a wonderful looking bird. Can you tell me what the 2 species are, what type of pelican in shots 1 and 2 there are pelicans with a black cap. The pelicans in Australia are visible black and white when swimming!

Regards Darren

Darren,

Thanks for the comments. I believe these are all American White Pelican. I think they're in various stages of plummage. I could be wrong. These birds are extremely uncommon in my area. They normally don't range this far west.

Anybody else have a different assessment?

Thankyou for that here is a link to the birds we have here in Australia http://www.birdphotos.com.au/pelicanweb/index.htm (external link) they are different and much bigger i think, I know the pelicans here have the largest beak in the pelican family or so i have read.

Thanks Keith, Angel & SuperDiver. I appreciate the comments.

Darren -- these birds are huge. I don't know how big those in Australia are, but these birds are amazing. I really wonder how they attain lift off. These are 50-65 inches high with a wingspan of up to 114 inches. They are truly amazing.

Thanks again for the comments everyone.

Hi there,

the Australian Pelicans are a massive bird wingspan of 90-100 inches, would love to see your pelicans I thought ours were big(I guess they still are a big boystrous bird). Here is a link to ours http://www.amonline.net.au …ts/australian_pelican.htm (external link) I was down the coast one day about 3 years ago, and saw a reverse pelican where it should have been white it was black and where it was black it was white, have confirmed since it was a melanistic colour mutation. Before I had my camerea, have been back since with no luck spotting him/her
